Sahana is one of the most promising young artists of today. She trained at Ganesa Natyalaya, Delhi, under the renowned Guru Padmabhushan Saroja Vaidyanathan in the Tanjavur style of Bharatanatyam. She also received advanced training under renowned Bharatanatyam dancers Rama Vaidyanathan and Anuradha Venkataraman.
Sahana has performed widely as a solo performer and received critical acclaim for the same. As a member of her guru’s troupe, she participated in Ganesa Natyalaya’s productions in lead roles and danced at major festivals both in India and abroad. She has given solo performances for Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan- London, Mandapa-Paris, Colorado Fine Arts Association, APAI, India Habitat Center, Yuva Bharati, ICC Colombo, ICCR, among others. She is an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) since 2012.
Sahana was selected to be the lead dancer for the Bharatanatyam segment, in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games held at Delhi in 2010. She was a senior dance faculty member at Ganesa Natyalaya and taught there for seven years, and was the instructor for Bharatanatyam at the Vanderbilt Dance Program from 2014- 2018.
Besides performing traditional ‘Margams’ in Bharatanatyam, Sahana also choreographs thematic productions in keeping with the traditions of the dance form. Devi Sarvamayam - the goddess permeates all, her first such production, explores the facets of the goddesses of Hindu mythology and how they inspire and represent the various roles women take in day-to-day lives. Her current production Apaam Swarupam – the shape of water is based on the rivers of India, and incorporates symbolism, regional cultures, languages, Hindu mythology and geography of the major rivers of North and South India.
Sahana received her Ph.D in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 2018, after which she served as a postdoctoral scholar at universities in the USA and Germany. Currently, she is an assistant professor of mathematics at Lafayette College, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
